Following a court case in 2002 which challenged the legality of using Electoral Roll information for non credit-related activities, such as marketing, it became possible to ‘opt out’ of the version of the Electoral Roll available for commercial use. Consumers who have opted out can still have their records searched for purposes such as credit and anti money laundering, but these records are not otherwise commercially available
